Varna Koota Explained

Varna (class) is the first of the eight kootas in Gun Milan. It is worth one point. Most people hear the word Varna and think of caste. This is a big misread. Naksham's analysis reveals that Varna Koota has nothing to do with birth caste or job.

The classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra^[1] uses Varna as a spiritual tone. It is the shade of your soul, not your social rank. Your Rashi (Moon sign) sits in one of four element groups. Each group gets one Varna name.

The four Varnas line up with the four natural elements. Water signs are Brahmin. Fire signs are Kshatriya. Earth signs are Vaishya. Air signs are Shudra. This is how the 12 Rashis break into four clean groups of three each.

Why use old caste names for this? The ancient Vedic sages picked these words because each Varna has a known tone. A Brahmin tone is calm and deep. A Kshatriya tone is bold and brave. A Vaishya tone is steady and useful. A Shudra tone is kind and helpful to others. These are all good traits. None is better or worse.

1. Male Varna is equal or higher than Female Varna. Score is one full point. The match passes.
2. Female Varna is higher than Male Varna. Score is zero. This is called Varna Dosha.^[2]

The Varna order from top to bottom is Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. So a Brahmin male with a Shudra female scores one full point. A Shudra male with a Brahmin female scores zero.

Naksham's view is that this rule is rooted in old time social norms. It is the smallest koota. A zero here is easy to carry.

A zero on Varna Koota is not a red flag. This is the smallest koota of the eight. You lose one point out of 36. Naksham's analysis reveals that many loving, long, happy marriages score zero here.
