What is Vastu Direction Analysis?

Vastu direction analysis is the foundational step in any Vastu assessment. It determines how cosmic energy flows through your home based on which direction your main entrance faces. In Vastu Shastra, the main door is called the "mouth of the house" (Griha Mukha) — just as food enters the body through the mouth, energy enters the home through the main door. The direction of this door determines which deity's energy predominantly fills the space.

The Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (Chapter 53) lays out clear rules about the auspiciousness of different entrance directions. A north-facing entrance invites the energy of Kubera (deity of wealth), an east-facing entrance channels Indra (king of gods, associated with power and sunrise energy), while a south-facing entrance is governed by Yama (deity of dharma and death). However, the classical texts are nuanced — a south-facing home is not inherently bad if the internal layout compensates correctly.

Our Direction Checker takes your entrance direction and maps it onto the Vastu Purusha Mandala — the sacred 9x9 grid that overlays every built structure. This gives you zone-by-zone guidance for where to place each room, which areas to keep open, which zones need specific remedies, and what to absolutely avoid in each direction.

The 8 Directions Explained

Vastu Shastra works with 8 primary directions, each governed by a specific deity, planet, and element. Understanding these associations is key to interpreting any Vastu analysis:

  • North (Uttara) — Kubera, Mercury, Water: The direction of wealth and career. North is governed by Kubera, the divine treasurer. Keeping this zone clean, open, and well-lit is believed to enhance financial prosperity. The North zone should ideally have a living room, study, or entrance — never a kitchen or toilet.
  • Northeast (Ishanya) — Soma/Shiva, Jupiter, Water: The most sacred direction in Vastu. Ishanya is the abode of divine consciousness. This zone must remain the lightest, cleanest, and most open part of the home. A pooja room here is ideal. A toilet in the Northeast is considered the most severe Vastu dosha. See our Toilet in Northeast guide for remedies.
  • East (Purva) — Indra, Sun, Fire: The direction of sunrise, new beginnings, and authority. East-facing entrances are considered highly auspicious as they receive the first rays of the sun. The East zone is ideal for the main entrance, living room, or children's study area.
  • Southeast (Agneya) — Agni, Venus, Fire: The fire zone — ideal for the kitchen, electrical appliances, and generators. Agni (fire god) rules this direction. Placing the kitchen stove in the Southeast, facing East, follows the classical prescription from the Manasara. See our Kitchen Vastu guide.
  • South (Dakshina) — Yama, Mars, Earth: Governed by Yama, the deity of dharma and death. Contrary to popular belief, south-facing homes are not inherently inauspicious — the Brihat Samhita simply requires more careful internal arrangement. The South zone is ideal for the master bedroom (heavy, grounding energy) and storage.
  • Southwest (Nairutya) — Nirruti, Rahu, Earth: The heaviest, most grounded zone. The master bedroom and heavy furniture belong here. The Southwest should never be left vacant or light — it anchors the entire home's energy. This is the zone of stability and relationship strength.
  • West (Paschima) — Varuna, Saturn, Water: The direction of the setting sun, creativity, and gains. Varuna (water deity) governs this zone. The West is suitable for dining rooms, children's bedrooms, and bathrooms. A west-facing home can be very auspicious for creative professionals.
  • Northwest (Vayavya) — Vayu, Moon, Air: The zone of movement and air. Guest bedrooms, garages, and servant quarters are best placed here. The Northwest governs social connections and travel. Excessive time spent in this zone may cause restlessness, which is why the master bedroom should never be here.

How Door Direction Affects Your Home

The main door direction is not just about which way you face when you step out — it fundamentally shapes the energy dynamics of your entire home. According to the Vastu Purusha Mandala, different segments of each wall have different energy signatures. Even within a north-facing wall, the Manasara identifies specific "padas" (segments) that are auspicious for the door and others that must be avoided.

For example, a north-facing home should ideally have its entrance in the 4th or 5th pada from the Northeast corner — this is the zone of Mukhya (main energy channel). A door in the 1st or 2nd pada can cause financial leakage, while a door in the 8th or 9th pada may bring legal troubles. These precise pada-level recommendations come directly from Chapter 9 of the Manasara and are built into our Direction Checker's analysis.

Beyond the door position, the facing direction determines the entire internal layout. A north-facing home should have the kitchen in the Southeast, master bedroom in the Southwest, pooja room in the Northeast, and living room near the entrance in the North. An east-facing home follows a different optimal layout because the energy flow pattern shifts. Our tool generates direction-specific layout recommendations so you don't need to cross-reference multiple texts yourself.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala

The Vastu Purusha Mandala is the heart of Vastu Shastra — a sacred geometric diagram that maps cosmic energy onto the floor plan of any built structure. "Vastu Purusha" is a mythological being whose body is believed to lie face-down within every building. According to the legend from the Matsya Purana, this cosmic being was pinned down by 45 deities who now permanently reside in different zones of the mandala.

The standard mandala is a 9x9 grid containing 81 padas (cells), each assigned to a specific deity. The Brahmasthana (central zone, 9 padas) is the heart of the mandala and should remain open, unobstructed, and free of heavy construction. This is where the navel of Vastu Purusha lies. The perimeter padas are assigned to 32 deities who govern the peripheral energies — these determine which rooms and activities are suitable for each zone.

Our Direction Checker uses the full 81-pada Vastu Purusha Mandala to generate its recommendations. When you select a direction, the tool rotates the mandala to align with your entrance and maps the 45 deities onto your specific floor plan orientation. This is the same method described in the Manasara (Chapters 7-9) and followed by classical Vastu consultants — we have simply automated the analysis for instant results.

Remedies by Direction

Each direction has specific remedies when the ideal Vastu layout cannot be achieved. These remedies come from the classical tradition and are designed to balance energy without structural changes:

  • North-facing remedies: If the entrance is not in the ideal pada, place a Kuber Yantra near the entrance. Keep the North zone well-lit with warm lighting. A small water feature (fountain or aquarium) in the North activates Kubera's energy. Avoid placing the kitchen or toilet in the North zone.
  • East-facing remedies: If the East zone is blocked or heavy, place a Surya Yantra on the East wall. Keep East-facing windows clean and unobstructed to allow morning sunlight. Avoid dark colors on East walls — use light yellow, white, or cream. A Tulsi plant near the East entrance is classically recommended.
  • South-facing remedies: Place a Vastu Yantra at the main entrance to neutralize excessive Yama energy. Paint the South walls in warmer tones (brick red, terracotta). Keep the South zone heavier than the North — store heavy items here. A Meru Yantra in the Brahmasthana helps balance south-facing homes.
  • West-facing remedies: Enhance the Northwest with wind chimes or bells (Vayu zone). Keep the West zone steady with stable furniture. Blue or grey tones work well for West walls. A crystal grid in the West can amplify Varuna's creative energy.

Vastu for Different Property Types

While the classical Vastu texts were written for independent houses and temples, the underlying principles of directional energy apply universally. However, each property type has unique considerations:

Independent houses offer the most flexibility — you can control the plot shape, entrance position, room layout, and even the building's orientation. Our Direction Checker provides the most detailed recommendations for independent homes, including garden placement, water storage, septic tank positioning, and compound wall heights for each direction.

Apartments and flats have fixed orientations and shared walls, limiting what you can change. However, internal room arrangement, furniture placement, and remedial measures are still fully within your control. The key is identifying which direction your flat's main door faces and optimizing the internal layout accordingly. See our Vastu for Flat guide for apartment-specific tips.

Shops and offices follow different Vastu priorities — the cash register placement, owner's seating direction, product display zones, and customer flow patterns all matter. A shop entrance in the North or East is ideal for attracting customers and wealth. See our Vastu for Shop guide for business-specific recommendations.

Regardless of property type, the Direction Checker provides a starting framework that you can adapt. The core principle remains the same: align your living spaces with the natural energy flow described by the Vastu Purusha Mandala, and the space supports rather than obstructs your well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my main door direction?+
Stand at your main door, facing outward (toward the street). Use a physical compass or a compass app on your phone. The direction you face is your main door direction. For example, if you face North when looking out, you have a north-facing home.
Which direction is best for the main door?+
North (Kubera — wealth) and East (Indra — power/sunrise) are generally considered the most auspicious. However, the ideal direction also depends on the plot shape, road position, and your personal birth chart. A south-facing door is not inherently bad if the internal layout compensates correctly.
Is a south-facing home bad in Vastu?+
No — this is a common misconception. The Brihat Samhita does not condemn south-facing homes. It requires more careful internal arrangement (heavy Southwest, open Northeast, kitchen in Southeast) but south-facing homes can be very auspicious when designed correctly. Many wealthy and successful people live in south-facing homes.
What is the Vastu Purusha Mandala?+
It is a sacred 9x9 grid (81 padas) that maps cosmic energy onto a building's floor plan. Each pada is assigned to a deity. The mandala determines which zones are suitable for which rooms and activities. Our Direction Checker uses this mandala to generate its recommendations.
Can I use this for my office or shop?+
Yes — the direction checker works for any built structure. The entrance direction determines energy flow regardless of whether it is a home, office, or shop. For shop-specific Vastu (cash register placement, customer flow), see our Vastu for Shop guide.
Do I need birth details for Vastu direction check?+
No — unlike Vedic astrology tools, Vastu direction analysis does not require any birth data. You only need your main door compass direction. However, advanced Vastu practice can incorporate your birth chart for personalized recommendations.
What if my door faces a sub-direction (Northeast, etc.)?+
Sub-directions are fully supported. A northeast-facing entrance is actually one of the most auspicious placements in Vastu — it receives the combined energy of both North (wealth) and East (power). Our tool provides specific analysis for all 8 directions including the 4 sub-directions.
How accurate is the compass app on my phone?+
Modern smartphone compass apps are accurate to within 2-3 degrees, which is sufficient for Vastu direction analysis. For the most accurate reading, hold your phone flat at waist height, stand at the center of your main door, face outward, and let the compass settle for a few seconds. Avoid standing near large metal objects.
Can Vastu direction change the luck of a home?+
Vastu Shastra teaches that spatial arrangement influences the flow of energy (prana) through a living space. Classical texts like Manasara describe how proper alignment supports health, wealth, and harmony. While Vastu does not claim to override karma or effort, it creates an environment that supports positive outcomes — much like how a well-organized workspace increases productivity.
What if I cannot change my door direction?+
Most people cannot change their main door direction, especially in apartments. In such cases, use remedial measures: yantras, mirrors, colors, plants, and furniture placement to optimize the energy flow within your existing layout. Our tool provides specific remedies for every direction.
Is west-facing home good or bad?+
West-facing homes are governed by Varuna (water deity) and are particularly beneficial for creative professionals, artists, and those in the entertainment industry. Saturn also influences the West, bringing discipline and long-term gains. The key is keeping the Southwest heavy and the Northeast light.
How is Vastu direction different from Feng Shui compass reading?+
Vastu and Feng Shui both use directional analysis but differ in their systems. Vastu uses the Vastu Purusha Mandala (81 padas, 45 deities) rooted in Vedic tradition, while Feng Shui uses the Bagua (8 areas, 5 elements) from Chinese tradition. Vastu is inherently linked to the Indian subcontinent's geography and Vedic cosmology, while Feng Shui emerged from Chinese philosophy.
