How Does Name Numerology Work?
Name numerology converts each letter of your name into a number, then reduces those numbers to a single digit (or Master Number). Naksham uses the Vedic Numerology (Ank Jyotish) method, which gives each letter the value that matches its sound, not its place in the alphabet. The number 9 stays sacred and is never assigned to a letter. You add the values, reduce the total, and that is your name number.
The Four Core Name Numbers
Your name yields four key numbers. The Destiny Number (all letters summed) reveals your life purpose and natural talents. The Soul Urge Number (vowels only) shows your inner desires and true motivations. The Personality Number (consonants only) reflects how others perceive you, your outer persona. Finally, the Active Number (first name only) shows the energy you project in daily interactions. Understanding all four together gives you a complete picture of how your name energy shapes your life.
Why Your Birth Name Matters
Your birth name carries the original vibration you entered the world with. Even if you have changed your name, married, or use a nickname, your birth name's numerological imprint remains your foundational energy. That said, any name you actively use creates a secondary vibration that influences your current circumstances. This is why numerologists sometimes recommend minor spelling adjustments to names, since adding or removing a letter can shift the total from an unfavorable number to a harmonious one, changing the name's energetic effect on your life.[1]
The Vedic Numerology Letter Values
Naksham reads your name with one method, the Vedic Ank Jyotish letter values.[1] Each letter is given the number that matches its sound vibration, not its place in the alphabet. The pattern uses only the numbers 1 through 8, since 9 stays sacred and is never given to a letter. These sound based values track how your name is actually spoken, which is why Indian numerologists rely on them for name work.
Two honest layers sit behind your reading. The letter values and the per-number meanings are a modern reading, set down in the early 20th century by Cheiro (1926) and others.[1] The planet, gemstone, and mantra links tied to each number come from classical Sanskrit sources.[3] We name each layer for what it is rather than calling the whole system ancient.
If you have seen the Western layout, where the alphabet simply runs in order from 1 to 9, you can read how it compares on our Pythagorean numerology page.[2] Naksham uses the Vedic sound based values for every name reading here.

How to Calculate Your Destiny Number Step by Step
Your Destiny Number, also called the Expression Number, comes from every letter in your full name.[2] You replace each letter with its Vedic Ank Jyotish value, add them all, then reduce the total to a single digit. The only exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which you keep as they are.
Take a real name like Ravi Sharma, read with the letter values above. First name and last name are each totalled, then the two are combined.
Step 1. Convert the first name. R is 2, A is 1, V is 6, I is 1. The first name Ravi adds to 2 plus 1 plus 6 plus 1, which gives 10.
Step 2. Convert the last name. S is 3, H is 5, A is 1, R is 2, M is 4, A is 1. The last name Sharma adds to 3 plus 5 plus 1 plus 2 plus 4 plus 1, which gives 16.
Step 3. Combine the two totals. 10 plus 16 gives 26.
Step 4. Reduce to a single digit. 26 becomes 2 plus 6, which is 8. The Destiny Number for Ravi Sharma is 8, a number ruled by Saturn in the Indian planet map.[3]
If a step had landed on 11, 22, or 33, you would stop there and read it as a master number. The same four steps work for any name. To check your result, run the name through the calculator above, which uses these exact letter values.
Name Numerology Meanings: What Each Destiny Number Reveals
Your Destiny Number names the talents you carry and the work your name is built to do.[2] Here is what each single digit indicates, with the planet (graha) the Vedic tradition links to it.[3] The number meanings are a modern reading, while the graha links behind them come from classical Sanskrit sources.
