What is Rashi?

Rashi is your Vedic zodiac sign, determined by the Moon's position at the time of your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is more important than the Sun sign because the Moon governs your mind, emotions, and instinctive reactions. There are 12 Rashis: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), and Meena (Pisces).

Moon Sign vs Sun Sign

Western astrology primarily uses the Sun sign (your zodiac based on birth month). Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign because the Moon moves through all 12 signs in just 28 days (vs the Sun's 365 days), making it far more specific to your exact birth moment. Two people born on the same day can have different Moon signs if born hours apart. Additionally, Vedic astrology applies the Lahiri Ayanamsa correction (~24°), which shifts signs compared to Western tropical astrology.

How Your Rashi Affects Daily Life

Your Rashi determines which daily Rashifal (horoscope) applies to you, which Nakshatras are compatible for marriage, which planetary transits affect you most, and which gemstones, mantras, and remedies are recommended. Every major prediction in Vedic astrology, from Gochar transit analysis to Dasha interpretation, starts with identifying your Rashi.

How to find your Rashi by date of birth

Finding your Rashi takes three steps. First, enter your date of birth in the Rashi Finder above. Second, add your city and birth time, or select the unknown-time option instead. Third, get your result. The tool names your rashi, or shows both possible signs with their local change time. No sign-up is needed, and the calculator is free.

The 12 Rashis

Each Rashi has a ruling planet, an element, and distinct personality traits:

When You Need Your Birth Time, and When You Do Not

The Moon changes rashi roughly every 2.25 days, so your birth time often remains optional. This means roughly four dates in nine contain a change, while most dates keep one rashi. On those crossing dates, your result shows both rashis and the local time of change.

Your birth time also pins your lagna (ascendant) and nakshatra (birth star) within the day. Your birth city sets the local day, so adding it helps resolve your result. If you leave your city blank, we clearly disclose our central India reference instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rashi in Vedic astrology?+
Rashi is your Vedic zodiac sign determined by the Moon's position at birth. Unlike Western astrology which uses the Sun sign, Vedic astrology considers the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) primary because it represents your mind, emotions, and mental tendencies.
How is my Rashi calculated?+
Your Rashi is determined by which zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the exact time of your birth, using the Sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa. The Moon moves through one sign approximately every 2.25 days.
Do I need my birth time to find my Rashi?+
Not always. If the Moon stays in one rashi throughout your local birth date, no time is needed. On crossing dates, the calculator shows both rashis and the local change time. Add your city to set the local day. Birth time also pins your lagna (ascendant) and nakshatra (birth star).
Can I find my rashi without my name?+
Yes. Your name is never used to calculate your rashi. Enter your birth date, add your city if known, and provide your birth time only if you know it.
How do I find my rashi name by date of birth?+
1. Enter your date of birth. 2. Add your city and birth time, or select the unknown-time option. 3. Read your rashi name and traits. On crossing dates, check the two possible rashis and their local change time.
Can my Rashi change?+
Your birth Rashi never changes. It is permanently fixed at the moment of your birth. Naksham uses the Lahiri Ayanamsa, the most widely accepted standard in Indian Vedic astrology.
What is the difference between Rashi and Lagna?+
Rashi (Moon sign) represents your emotional nature. Lagna (Ascendant) represents your physical body and outward personality. Lagna requires your birth time and place. Rashi often needs only your birth date, with your city setting the local day.
Which Rashi is best for marriage compatibility?+
Compatibility depends on comparing both partners' Rashis and Nakshatras through the Ashtakoota system. Use Naksham's Kundali Matching tool for detailed 36-point compatibility analysis.
What are the 12 Rashis and their lords?+
Mesha (Mars), Vrishabha (Venus), Mithuna (Mercury), Karka (Moon), Simha (Sun), Kanya (Mercury), Tula (Venus), Vrischika (Mars), Dhanu (Jupiter), Makara (Saturn), Kumbha (Saturn), Meena (Jupiter).
What is the connection between Rashi and Nakshatra?+
Each Rashi contains 2.25 Nakshatras (lunar mansions). While Rashi gives a broad zodiac classification, Nakshatra provides deeper personality insights and determines your Vimshottari Dasha sequence.
