Frequently Asked Questions
What are attars?
Attars (also spelled ittars) are traditional natural perfumes made through hydro-distillation of botanical ingredients — flowers, herbs, spices, and woods — into a sandalwood oil base. This centuries-old technique originated in India and produces concentrated, long-lasting fragrances without any synthetic chemicals or alcohol. Each Naksham attar is formulated according to Vedic Rashi associations.
How are attars different from perfumes?
Unlike modern perfumes that use synthetic aroma chemicals and alcohol as a carrier, attars are 100% natural and oil-based. They do not evaporate quickly like alcohol-based perfumes — instead, they sit close to the skin and evolve over 8-12 hours. Attars are also traditionally used in spiritual practice, not just for personal fragrance, making them a bridge between self-care and sacred ritual.
How to use attars?
Apply a small amount of attar to your pulse points — inner wrists, behind the ears, and the base of the throat — after your morning bath. The warmth of these points helps the fragrance diffuse naturally throughout the day. In Vedic practice, applying attar before mantra chanting or meditation enhances the ritual atmosphere. A little goes a long way — one or two dabs is sufficient.
Are attars natural and chemical-free?
Yes. Traditional attars — including all Naksham Rashi Attars — are made entirely from natural botanical ingredients distilled into a natural oil base. They contain no synthetic fragrances, no parabens, no alcohol, and no artificial preservatives. This makes them suitable for sensitive skin and safe for daily use in personal and spiritual practice.
