Panchang 11 August 2026: Sawan Shivratri
Tonight is Sawan Shivratri, the Shivratri that falls inside Shivji's own month. It is not Maha Shivaratri, which comes in Phalguna. It is the monthly Shivratri landing in Shravan, and that placement is what gives it weight.

Krishna Chaturdashi runs until 1:53 AM, so the tithi covers the whole night vigil. The Moon leaves Punarvasu at 10:09 AM and enters Pushya. Yoga is Siddhi. Karana is Vishti, better known as Bhadra. Sunrise is 5:47 AM in Delhi and sunset 7:05 PM.
The Moon is a thin four percent sliver, one day from Amavasya. Shivratri is deliberately kept at the darkest end of the month. The tradition places the vigil where the Moon gives least light, and asks you to find the light inside instead.
Siddhi yoga is the useful detail here. It is one of the yogas classically read as favourable for completing what you begin, which suits a vow taken tonight.

Rahu Kaal runs 3:46 PM to 5:25 PM. That is well clear of the night vigil, so it costs you nothing tonight. Keep any preparation, shopping, or travel outside it.

How the Night Is Kept
Fast through the day on fruit and water. After sunset, bathe and begin. The classical form divides the night into four prahar, with an abhishek in each, though most households keep one sitting and stay awake as long as they can.
Offer water first, then milk, then water again. Place bilva leaves in threes. Chant Om Namah Shivaya, or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra if you keep it. Break the fast the next morning after a final offering.
Kanwar pilgrims traditionally time their water offering to this day, which is why the roads to Shivji temples are fullest tonight. If you are travelling, leave early.
