Sawan 2026: The Month That Belongs to Shivji

Sawan, also called Shravan, is the fifth month of the Vedic lunar calendar. It is the month devotees give to Shivji. Across North India the streets fill with saffron, water is carried to Shivji temples, and Monday becomes the most important day of the week.

The dates below are computed from the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri Ayanamsa, at Delhi sunrise. They are not copied from another calendar.

Sawan 2026 Dates

India follows two lunar month systems, and Sawan begins on different days under each. Both are correct. Which one applies to you depends on where your family keeps the calendar.

North India (Purnimanta reckoning): 30 July to 28 August 2026. The month runs from the day after Guru Purnima to Shravan Purnima. This is the calendar used in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.

West and South India (Amanta reckoning): 13 August to 11 September 2026. The month runs from one new moon to the next. This is the calendar used in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

The difference is one fortnight, not a disagreement. A Purnimanta month starts two weeks earlier because it begins at the full moon rather than the new moon.

The Four Sawan Somvar Dates

Somvar means Monday. A Monday that falls inside Sawan is the most auspicious day of the year to worship Shivji, and each one carries its own vrat (fast). There are four in 2026.

North India (Purnimanta):

1. First Somvar: Monday, 3 August 2026
2. Second Somvar: Monday, 10 August 2026
3. Third Somvar: Monday, 17 August 2026, which is also Nag Panchami
4. Fourth Somvar: Monday, 24 August 2026

West and South India (Amanta): 17 August, 24 August, 31 August, and 7 September 2026.

Tuesdays in Sawan carry the Mangala Gauri vrat, kept by married women for Maa Parvatiji. In the North those fall on 4, 11, 18, and 25 August 2026.

Sawan Shivratri 2026

Sawan Shivratri falls on the Chaturdashi (fourteenth lunar day) of the dark fortnight of Shravan. In 2026 that is Tuesday, 11 August in the North, and 10 September under the Amanta calendar.

This is not Maha Shivaratri, which comes in Phalguna. Sawan Shivratri is the monthly Shivratri that happens to land inside Shivji's own month, which is what gives it weight. Kanwar pilgrims traditionally time their water offering to this day.

How to Keep the Sawan Somvar Vrat

The Somvar vrat is simple, and that is the point. It asks for steadiness rather than difficulty.

1. Rise before sunrise and bathe. Wear clean clothes, ideally white or saffron.
2. Offer water to a Shivling. Plain water is enough. Milk, honey, and curd are added where the family tradition includes them.
3. Place bilva (bael) leaves on the Shivling in threes, with the smooth side down.
4. Light a lamp and offer white flowers. Avoid ketaki flowers, which tradition sets aside.
5. Chant Om Namah Shivaya one hundred and eight times. A japa mala keeps the count so your attention can stay on the mantra.
6. Keep a single meal after sunset. Fruit, milk, and sabudana are the usual foods. Skip grain, salt, onion, and garlic if your family keeps the stricter form.
7. Read or listen to the Shiv Katha in the evening, then break the fast.

If a full fast is not possible, keep the water offering and the mantra. A vrat you can hold for four Mondays is worth more than one you abandon after the first.

Why Rudraksha Belongs to This Month

Rudraksha is the bead of Shivji. The Shiva Purana gives its origin in Shivji's own words, saying that drops of tears fell from his half-closed eyes, and from those tear-drops the rudraksha plants came up. The Padma Purana carries a second account, tracing the bead to drops of perspiration that fell during the burning of Tripura. Both are classical, and the tradition has carried both for centuries.

Sawan is when devotees traditionally begin wearing one. The five-faced bead is the one most people start with. The Shiva Purana calls the five-faced rudraksha Rudra himself and gives it the name kalagni. The Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad describes the same bead as the five Brahmans, Sadyojata through Isana.

Chandra (Moon) rules Monday, and Chandra sits on Shivji's head in every image of him. That is the quiet logic behind Somvar. The Moon governs the mind, and a month of Mondays given to Shivji is a month of steadying the mind.

Shravan is also the monsoon month, when the earth is soaked and still. Vedic practice reads that stillness as the right condition for inward work. Field labour pauses, so devotion has room.

Sawan is a good window to begin any practice you have been putting off. Start a japa count, wear the bead you have been meaning to wear, or keep one Monday properly. The month rewards beginning more than it rewards intensity.

What to Avoid

Avoid treating the fast as a test of toughness. The vrat is devotion, not punishment, and a gentler form kept fully is the better offering.

Avoid tulsi leaves on the Shivling. Tulsi is offered to Sri Vishnuji, and tradition keeps the two apart.

Avoid buying a rudraksha with no certificate. Fakes are common in this trade, and a lab report is the only thing that settles the question.
