What Is a Rudraksha
A Rudraksha is the seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, worn as a sacred bead across the Himalayan belt for thousands of years. The name joins two words, Rudra (a name of Shivji) and aksha (eye), so a Rudraksha is the tear of Shivji. The Shiva Purana tells it plainly: from the half-closed eyes of Shivji, drops of tears fell, and from those tears the Rudraksha plants first grew.[1]
Each bead carries faces, called Mukhi, that run as natural lines from top to bottom. The face count decides the bead, from a single face up to twenty-one. The Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad, a minor Upanishad of the Samaveda, sets out the deity of each face and the result of wearing it.[3] A Rudraksha is said to remove sin by sight, by touch, and by chanting, which is why it sits at the heart of daily Vedic practice.[1]
What Is a Rudraksha Calculator, and How It Works
A Rudraksha calculator tells you which bead to wear, and then shows you exactly how it reached that answer. There are two layers to any honest answer. The first is the bead meaning, which deity governs each face and what it grants, drawn straight from classical texts. The second is the matching step, which planet in your chart points to which bead. We treat these two layers very differently, because one is ancient and one is modern.
The classical method, the modern method, and why we show both
We give you one clear bead, then name the real method behind it, with nothing hand-waved.[2]
The classical method: deity and phala
Each Mukhi has a presiding deity and a stated result (phala), set down in the Shiva Purana and the Padma Purana, and cross-confirmed by the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad. This meaning is the ancient, cited layer, and it does not change.[1][2]
The modern method: your birth chart
We read your sidereal chart using the Lahiri Ayanamsa and the Swiss Ephemeris, find the planet that rules your Moon sign, then map that planet to a bead. No classical text maps planets to beads, so this matching step is a modern convention, and we label it as one.[3]
Why we show you both
The meaning is ancient and cited. The matching step is modern, and we say so. You see the bead, the deity, the phala, and the honest provenance behind each, with nothing hidden.
Types of Rudraksha and Their Meanings (1 to 21 Mukhi)
Below is every faced bead from one to twenty-one Mukhi, with its deity, its result, and the intention it serves. For the first fourteen, the deity and the result come from the owned classical texts.[1][2][3] From fifteen to twenty-one, no classical source enumerates the bead, so we mark these as later tradition and never cite a Purana for them.

Special beads: Gauri Shankar, Ganesh, Trijuti, and Sawar
Some beads are not faced at all but joined or shaped by nature. These are bespoke and rare, with no count of faces and no classical source, so we present them as later tradition. Read more in our guide to special Rudraksha beads.
Rudraksha for Each Planet (Graha to Mukhi)
This table is the modern matching layer, the step that turns your birth chart into a bead. It is a twentieth-century convention, not a classical rule. No owned text maps a planet to a bead.[1][3] We show it because it is the method most astrologers use today, and because the calculator runs on it. The deity in each row stays classical for the first fourteen beads.

Which Rudraksha for Your Intention
If you have no birth date to hand, you can still choose by what you seek. This is the older, scriptural way of picking a bead, by intention and the result the texts promise.[1] Each row below names the bead and the verse behind it.
Shiva Purana v.72: a poor man becomes a great lord (7 Mukhi); v.78: the radiance of the twelve suns, never poverty (12 Mukhi).
Shiva Purana v.74: energy and fearlessness of Maa Durgaji (9 Mukhi); v.73: the full span of life (8 Mukhi).
Shiva Purana v.76: fulfilment of desires and peace (10 Mukhi); v.80: quells all sins and removes disease (14 Mukhi).
Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad: union of Ardhanarishvara (2 Mukhi); Kamadeva, fulfilment of desire (13 Mukhi).
Shiva Purana v.77: one becomes victorious everywhere (11 Mukhi); v.74: fearlessness of Maa Durgaji (9 Mukhi).
Shiva Purana v.69: all salvation (5 Mukhi); v.64: worldly pleasure and salvation (1 Mukhi); v.68: mastery of knowledge (4 Mukhi).
Benefits of Wearing a Rudraksha
The texts speak of clear results. A Rudraksha is said to remove sin by sight, touch, and chanting, and to steady the mind toward the divine.[1] The single-faced bead grants worldly pleasure and salvation alike.[1] The five-faced bead, the most worn of all, grants every desired object and is safe for everyone.[1]
Beyond the scriptural results, wearers report a calmer mood and steadier focus over time. A Rudraksha harmonises the planet it is matched to, rather than amplifying it, which is why it is gentle to wear and suits a wide range of people. It asks only for daily wear, a clean surface, and the mantra.
How to Wear and Energise (Pran Pratishtha)
The Shiva Purana is firm on one point: a Rudraksha worn without the mantra is incomplete.[1] The classical activation mantra for any Rudraksha is the Panchakshara, Om Namah Shivaya, chanted one hundred and eight times. Follow these steps to energise a new bead.
- Cleanse the bead. Wash it gently with raw milk, then with clean water, and dry it with a soft cloth.
- Set your day. Wear most beads on the day that suits the matched planet. Monday for the Moon, Thursday for Jupiter, and so on. The calculator names the day for your bead.
- Chant the mantra. Hold the bead and chant Om Namah Shivaya one hundred and eight times, slowly and with attention.
- Wear it with care. Place the bead where the text prescribes. The six-faced bead is worn on the right arm, the nine-faced on the left hand, and the twelve and fourteen-faced on the head.[1]
The per-bead planetary beej mantra you may see elsewhere is a modern planetary overlay, not the Rudraksha mantra. The classical activation is the Panchakshara, and it is the one we recommend.
Rules, Dos and Don'ts
- Do keep the bead clean and re-oil it now and then so it stays dark and supple.
- Do chant the mantra daily, even briefly, to keep the bead active.
- Do remove it before using harsh soap or chemicals, which dry the surface.
- Don't let others wear your activated bead. A Rudraksha is personal once energised.
- Don't chase a higher Mukhi for its own sake. A higher face count is different, not better.
- Don't treat the bead as a cure for medical or mental-health conditions. It is a spiritual support, worn alongside proper care.
How to Identify an Original Rudraksha
The market carries many fakes, so verify before you wear. The surest test is an X-ray, which shows the internal seed chambers and confirms the face count without cutting the bead. A genuine bead has natural, slightly uneven faces and a clear internal structure, while a carved fake shows even, machine-cut lines and a hollow or weighted interior.
Every Naksham Rudraksha is Lab Certified | AstroGrade(TM). Each bead passes Individual Product Testing, where the Mukhi count and the species are verified one bead at a time before it ships. For the full list of checks, see our guide on how to identify a real Rudraksha. You can also browse our certified Rudraksha malas, or browse all Rudraksha by mukhi, each bead energised with the proper mantra before dispatch.
