Tulsi Vivah: The Sacred Wedding of Tulsi and Shaligram 2026
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial wedding of the Tulsi (holy basil) plant with Sri Vishnuji, worshipped as a Shaligram stone. Naksham's panchang marks it on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, the twelfth tithi (lunar day) of the bright fortnight. It follows Devuthani Ekadashi, the day Sri Vishnuji is said to wake from his four-month rest.
Regional practice varies. Many homes hold the wedding on the evening of Ekadashi, and some keep the window open until Kartik Purnima. The live dates above follow the Dwadashi tradition, so confirm your local timing through the Vedic panchang.
The Story
Tradition holds that Tulsi was once Vrinda, a woman of deep devotion and unbroken faith. Her story ends with a blessing from Sri Vishnuji, who promised she would be worshipped beside him forever as the Tulsi plant. The yearly wedding honours that promise in courtyards, balconies, and temples across India.
In the same story, Sri Vishnuji takes the form of the Shaligram, a smooth black river stone. This is why the bridegroom at Tulsi Vivah is a Shaligram rather than a painted image. The Agni Purana gives a full chapter to Shaligram worship and names one kind of stone Vasudeva, after Sri Vishnuji himself.[1]
The rite also closes a season. The Agni Purana lists the months of Sri Vishnuji's yearly sleep among the times when weddings are not held.[2] Once he wakes, the first wedding many homes celebrate is this one, and the family wedding season follows.
Many families who have no daughter perform the kanyadaan (giving away of the bride) for Tulsi. They treat the rite with the same care, songs, and sweets as a wedding in the family.
Confirm Kartik Shukla Dwadashi, or your family's chosen day, in the Vedic panchang.
Clean the Tulsi pot and the space around it. Paint the pot or wrap it in fresh cloth.
Build a small mandap (wedding canopy) over the pot with sugarcane stalks.
Dress Tulsi as a bride with a red chunri, bangles, and a bindi. Add a small mangalsutra if your family uses one.
Place the Shaligram, or an image of Sri Vishnuji, on a yellow cloth beside the pot.
Offer water, turmeric, kumkum, flowers, sugarcane, amla, and seasonal fruit to both.
Tie the two together with a sacred thread or a cloth knot, the gathbandhan of a Hindu wedding.
Carry the Shaligram around the Tulsi seven times, as the couple's seven pheras.
Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times, using a Tulsi Wood Mala if you keep one.
Close with aarti, then share the prasad, sugarcane, and fruit with family and neighbours.
Some temples and homes hold a full priest-led ceremony with Vedic mantras. A short family rite done with care is still complete. Many families avoid plucking Tulsi leaves on Ekadashi and Dwadashi, so they pick the leaves for the offering a day earlier.
Jyotish Significance
Tulsi Vivah falls in the bright half of Kartik, when the Moon gains light each night. The Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) supports beginnings, and Kartik is already a month of lamps and devotion. A wedding rite at this point turns the household from the long pause of Chaturmasya toward fresh commitments.
In Jyotish, Guru (Jupiter) and Shukra (Venus) are the two grahas most closely read for marriage. Many families use Tulsi Vivah as the moment to restart wedding talks. A real wedding still needs its own muhurat, and the Agni Purana advises against weddings while Guru or Shukra is set (hidden in the Sun's glare).[2]
If marriage is on your mind this season, a kundali matching report and the muhurat finder are the right next steps. Note that the winter Kharmas closes the wedding season again in December.
What to Do and What to Avoid
Do keep the Tulsi plant healthy and clean through the year, not only on the wedding day. The rite honours a living plant that the home tends daily.
Do involve the whole family, including children. Songs, sweets, and shared work turn the evening into a real household celebration.
Avoid treating the rite as a show. A small, sincere ceremony carries more meaning than a crowded one with no attention.
Avoid harsh words and quarrels on the day. A wedding, even a symbolic one, asks the home to feel calm and kind.
