Chaturmas, the four-month rest between Devshayani and Devuthani Ekadashi

25 Jul 2026, 5:38 am – 21 Nov 2026, 6:48 am

Chaturmas runs from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi, roughly the rainy season. Tradition keeps it for prayer, fasting and quiet, not for big new starts. Weddings, housewarmings and mundan (first haircut) wait for it to close.

Kharmas, when the Sun sits in Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces)

16 Dec 2026, 10:25 am – 14 Jan 2027, 9:10 pm

For about a month at a time, the Sun passes through Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces). Guru (Jupiter) rules both signs, and the Sun's heat dulls his blessing there. So weddings, housewarmings and openings wait until the Sun moves on.

These are the rules every listed date had to pass.

The Moon should sit in a nakshatra (lunar star) suited to a lasting home. No flawed tithi (lunar day), yoga or weekday can touch the window, and Vishti (Bhadra) is left out. Kharmas and Chaturmas both pause the rite. It also waits while Guru (Jupiter) or Shukra (Venus) sits too close to the Sun to be seen.

Kharmas, Chaturmas, Guru and Shukra asta: Panchang convention followed by major almanacs. No owned classical verse states these pauses, so we name them as convention.

Gandanta: Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Ch. 92, vv. 1 and 3 (Santhanam): ceremonies like marriage avoid nakshatra gandanta. We exclude the full navamsa on each side of the Revati-Ashwini, Ashlesha-Magha and Jyeshtha-Mula junctions, as major almanacs do.

Computation: Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, New Delhi sunrise to next sunrise. Each listed span is when every condition holds together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Griha Pravesh needed for a rented home?+

Many families do a simple entry puja even in a rented home. The full rite matters most for a home you own or built. Either way, a shubh time is a kind way to begin.

Can we move our things in before the Griha Pravesh?+

Most families wait and enter with the puja first. If you must move early, keep the kitchen unused until the rite is done. Ask your family priest what your tradition follows.

Why does Chaturmas stop housewarmings?+

Chaturmas is a four-month rest period in the Hindu year. New beginnings like weddings and housewarmings are held back until it ends. The calendar opens again after Devuthani Ekadashi.

Should we boil milk on the first day?+

Yes, boiling milk until it spills over is a common first step in the new kitchen. It stands for plenty in the home. Do it inside the shubh window if you can.
