What Are Alphabet Numbers in Numerology?
In numerology, every letter of the alphabet carries a number. These letter-number values are the base of all name-based numerology. Your Destiny Number, Soul Urge Number, Personality Number, and Business Name Number all come from turning the letters of a name into numbers, then adding and reducing them.[1]
Naksham runs one method, Vedic Numerology (Ank Jyotish). For names written in Latin letters, it uses the Chaldean chart, which groups letters by their sound vibration. This is the same convention Indian numerologists follow for English names, so the free tools and the paid report always return the same name numbers for you.
Here is the honest picture, and we keep it clear. The link between a number and its planet (graha), gemstone, and remedy comes from classical texts. The everyday meaning of the digits 1 to 9, such as 1 for leadership or 3 for creativity, is a modern reading, not an ancient Sanskrit rule. Both layers sit side by side, and we never blur them.
Each number from 1 to 9 reads as a distinct energy. The 1 stands for independence and leadership. The 2 stands for partnership and care. And so on through 9, which stands for completion and wide compassion. When you turn your name into numbers, the total points to the main energy your name carries, the note people pick up when they say, write, or even think your name.
The Complete A to Z Alphabet Chart (Vedic / Chaldean)
The table below shows every letter and its number on the Vedic (Chaldean) chart, the one Naksham uses for every name. It uses only 1 through 8, since 9 is held as sacred. Under it, a smaller box shows the Western (Pythagorean) chart for comparison only.
How to Use the Numerology Alphabet Chart
Turning a name into a number takes four simple steps. Once you know them, you can read any name, your own, a friend's, a business, even a pet's.
Step 1: Write Out the Name
Pick the name you want to read. On the Vedic (Chaldean) chart, use the name you are most commonly known by, the one people actually call you in daily life. That is the name whose vibration is active around you right now.[1]
Step 2: Look Up Each Letter's Number
Using the Vedic (Chaldean) chart above, find the number for each letter in the name. Write the number under each letter so you can see the full breakdown.
Step 3: Add All the Numbers Together
Add every letter value to get a raw total. This unreduced total, called the compound number, carries its own meaning before you reduce it further.
Step 4: Reduce to a Single Digit
If the total has more than one digit, add the digits together. Keep going until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9. The one exception is the Master Numbers, 11, 22, and 33, which we keep whole because they carry a higher charge of their root.[2]
Chaldean vs Pythagorean Alphabet: Why Naksham Uses the Vedic Chart
The two charts agree on a few letters (A=1 in both) but differ on many. Here is what sets them apart, and why Naksham reads every name with the Vedic (Chaldean) chart.
How Each Chart Assigns Letters
The Western Pythagorean chart assigns numbers by plain alphabetical position. A is the 1st letter, so A=1. B is the 2nd, so B=2. At I, the 9th letter, the cycle resets, so J=1, K=2, and on. It is tidy and easy to remember.[2]
The Vedic (Chaldean) chart, which Naksham uses, assigns numbers by the sound vibration of each letter. Letters with a similar sound share a number, whatever their place in the alphabet. For example, C, G, L, and S all take 3 because they share a sound quality. It is harder to memorise, but it is the reading that matches how the name actually sounds.[1]
The Number 9
On the Western chart, 9 is a normal digit, given to the letters I and R. On the Vedic (Chaldean) chart, 9 is sacred and never given to a letter. The pattern behind it: any number times 9 gives digits that add back to 9, which the tradition read as a sign of completeness.
Letters That Differ Most
A few letters swing a lot between the two charts. The letter F is 8 on the Chaldean chart but 6 on the Pythagorean one. The letter H is 5 on Chaldean but 8 on Pythagorean. The letter O is 7 on Chaldean but 6 on Pythagorean. So the same name often lands on two different totals, which is why we stay with one chart for every reading.
Which Name to Use
Naksham reads the name you are commonly known by, since that is the vibration active around you now. Someone written as “William” on their papers but called “Will” by everyone would be read as “Will”.
How Your Name's Numbers Are Calculated, a Worked Example
Let us walk through a full calculation for the name “SARAH” on the Vedic (Chaldean) chart, so you can see exactly how the alphabet chart becomes a reading.
Reading “SARAH” on the Vedic (Chaldean) Chart
Look up each letter: S=3, A=1, R=2, A=1, H=5. The raw sum is 3 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 12. The compound number 12 carries its own meaning, a number of learning through experience. Then reduce: 1 + 2 = 3. The name number for “SARAH” is 3, the number of creativity, self-expression, and joy, linked to the planet Jupiter (Guru).[1]
Reading “JAMES” on the Vedic (Chaldean) Chart
Look up each letter: J=1, A=1, M=4, E=5, S=3. The raw sum is 1 + 1 + 4 + 5 + 3 = 14. The compound number 14 is a karmic number, tied to change through experience. Then reduce: 1 + 4 = 5. The name number for “JAMES” is 5, the number of freedom, travel, and the senses, linked to the planet Mercury (Budh).[1]
What the Western Chart Would Give
For comparison only, the Western Pythagorean chart would read “SARAH” as S=1, A=1, R=9, A=1, H=8, which totals 20 and reduces to 2. That is a different number from the Vedic 3, which is exactly why Naksham keeps to one chart. Your reading uses the Vedic (Chaldean) number, here 3 for “SARAH” and 5 for “JAMES”, so your result never changes from one tool to the next.[2]
