How to Calculate Your Life Path Number (Bhagyank): Step by Step

Your Life Path number is the most important number in numerology. Naksham reads it the Vedic way and calls it your Bhagyank (Destiny Number), the single number your full birth date adds up to. Step 1: Write Down Your Full Date of Birth

Start with your complete birth date. You need the day, month, and year.

Example: 5 May 1992

Write it with two digits for the day and the month:

• Day: 05
• Month: 05 (May is the 5th month)
• Year: 1992

Always use the Gregorian calendar date, the standard calendar used in most countries. If your family uses a lunar calendar, convert to the Gregorian date first. Zeros count as valid digits. Do not skip them.

Step 2: Add All the Digits Together

In Vedic Ank Jyotish, your Bhagyank is the sum of every digit in your full birth date. Add the day, the month, and the year, all into one total. This is the heart of the method.^[2]

5 May 1992:

0 + 5 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 31

That single total is the seed of your Bhagyank. Take care to include every digit, including the zeros in the day, month, or year.

Step 3: Reduce to a Single Digit

If your total has more than one digit, add those digits together. Keep going until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9.

31 → 3 + 1 = 4

Your Life Path number (Bhagyank) is 4.

There is one exception. If your total is 11, 22, or 33, stop. Those are Master Numbers, and Step 4 explains them.

Step 4: Check for Master Numbers

Master Numbers are 11, 22, and 33. They carry double energy and a deeper purpose. When your total lands on 11, 22, or 33 at any stage, do not reduce it further. That is your Bhagyank.^[1]

Example: Master Number 22

Date of birth: 29 September 2000

2 + 9 + 0 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 22 → STOP

This person has Life Path 22, the Master Builder.

Example: Master Number 33

Date of birth: 15 August 1990

1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33 → STOP

This person has Life Path 33, the Master Teacher.

The master can also appear one step in.

Date of birth: 5 August 1996

0 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 38, then 3 + 8 = 11 → STOP

This person has Life Path 11, the Visionary. You stop the moment you land on 11, 22, or 33.

A Master Number always carries the energy of its root digit too. 11 carries 2, 22 carries 4, and 33 carries 6. So the person feels both the higher calling and the everyday pull of the base number.^[2]

Step 5: Practice with Two More Dates

Date of birth: 22 March 1990

2 + 2 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8

Life Path (Bhagyank) is 8.

Date of birth: 30 December 1995

3 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 30, then 3 + 0 = 3

Life Path (Bhagyank) is 3. No Master Number here, since 30 is not 11, 22, or 33.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors Naksham's analysis sees most often when people calculate by hand.

1. Forgetting to add the whole date

The Bhagyank is the sum of every digit in your full birth date, then reduced. Add the day, month, and year digits all together into one total. Leaving out the year, or the month, gives a different number.^[2]

2. Mixing up your Bhagyank with your Mulank

Your Mulank (root number) comes from your day of birth alone. Born on the 15th? Your Mulank is 6 (1 + 5). Your Bhagyank uses the full date. They are two different numbers, and both have meaning in Vedic numerology.

3. Skipping zeros

Write April as 04 and add 0 + 4 = 4. The year 2000 is 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2. Every zero counts in the total. Skip one and your sum is wrong.
