Vivah Panchami: The Wedding Day of Maa Sitaji and Sri Ramji 2026
Vivah Panchami falls on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, the fifth tithi (lunar day) of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha. Tradition marks it as the anniversary of the wedding of Maa Sitaji and Sri Ramji in Mithila. Naksham's panchang sets the day by the Panchami tithi at sunrise.
The day is celebrated with special warmth in Janakpur, Maa Sitaji's home town in present-day Nepal, and in Ayodhya. Temples re-enact the wedding with songs, processions, and feasts. Confirm the local timing through the Vedic panchang.
The Story
King Janaka of Mithila found a baby girl in the furrow while ploughing a field for a sacrifice. He raised her as his own daughter and named her Sita. He declared that only a man who could string a mighty bow kept in his family would win her hand.
Many kings came and failed even to lift it. Sri Ramji arrived with his brother Lakshmanji and the sage Vishwamitra, raised the bow, and snapped it in two. The Agni Purana tells how Janaka then gave Maa Sitaji to Sri Ramji in marriage.[1] In the same ceremony, Lakshmanji married Urmila, and Bharatji and Shatrughnaji married Mandavi and Shrutakirti.
The texts tell the wedding itself. The Panchami of Margashirsha as its date comes from living tradition, kept most closely in Mithila and Ayodhya. Tradition calls the bow Pinaka, the bow of Shivji.
Close with aarti and share the prasad with family and neighbours.
Some devotees keep a light fast until the evening puja. Married couples often pray together on this day for a steady, kind partnership.
Customs in Janakpur and Ayodhya
In Janakpur, the Janaki Mandir becomes the centre of a wedding that lasts several days. Devotees act out each step, from the bridegroom's arrival to the pheras, much like a family wedding. Pilgrims from India and Nepal fill the town to take part.
In Ayodhya, temples dress Sri Ramji as a bridegroom and hold wedding processions with music. Many homes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar sing the same songs they use at their own weddings.
Should You Marry on Vivah Panchami?
Families hold two views. Many see it as a blessed date, since it remembers the most honoured wedding in the tradition. In parts of Mithila, though, some families avoid weddings on this day, remembering the trials Maa Sitaji faced later in her life.
Either way, a wedding date needs a proper muhurat and a careful look at both charts. Use kundali matching and the muhurat finder before you decide. Vivah Panchami often falls in the last weeks before the winter Kharmas, when weddings pause for a month.
Jyotish Significance
Vivah Panchami falls in Shukla Paksha (the waxing fortnight), when the Moon gains light each night. Panchami is a tithi read as good for steady, nurturing work. The day carries a calm, family-centred mood.
In Jyotish, Shukra (Venus) and Guru (Jupiter) are the grahas most closely read for marriage. A day that remembers an ideal marriage is a natural time to reflect on your own bond. Couples often use it to renew their promises in simple ways.
This reflection is not a forecast. If questions about marriage timing are on your mind, a reading of your own chart gives far more specific answers than any single date.
What to Do and What to Avoid
Do remember the couple together. Maa Sitaji and Sri Ramji are worshipped as one pair on this day, never one without the other.
Do share sweets and kindness. The wedding mood belongs to the whole family and neighbourhood.
Avoid quarrels at home, especially between partners. The day asks for patience and warmth.
Avoid treating the day as a deadline. A wedding date chosen in a hurry serves no one, so take time to check the muhurat.
