Vedic Fasting (Vrat) by Weekday — Which Day for Which Graha
Fasting (Vrat or Upavasa) is the oldest, most democratic, and most universally accessible remedy in the Vedic system. It costs nothing, requires no materials, can be practised by anyone regardless of age, gender, or economic status, and produces tangible shifts in both physical health and karmic patterns. In Jyotish, fasting on the day corresponding to a specific Graha is one of the foundational remedies prescribed for weak, afflicted, or malefic planetary placements — and it is the first remedy that any ethical astrologer should recommend, precisely because it is free and accessible.
The word "Upavasa" literally means "to sit near" (upa = near, vasa = to dwell) — sitting near the Divine. Fasting is therefore not self-denial for its own sake; it is the deliberate creation of physical and mental space for spiritual proximity. When the body is freed from the metabolic demands of digestion, energy is redirected to subtler processes — meditation deepens, mantra resonance intensifies, and the mind naturally moves toward Sattva (purity).
The Seven-Day Fasting Calendar
Sunday — Surya Vrat
Graha: Surya (Sun) Deity: Surya Deva, Lord Vishnu Governs: Soul, authority, father, government, health, vitality
What to eat: One meal before sunset. The meal should be wheat-based — chapati, halwa, or poori are traditional. Jaggery (gur) and ghee are permitted. Fruits are allowed throughout the day. Drink water freely.
What to avoid: Salt-heavy food, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and Tamasic (stale, processed, leftover) items.
Mantra: Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah — chant 108 times at sunrise, facing east, after offering Surya Arghya (water to the Sun).
Duration: Sunrise to sunset. Break the fast with a simple meal after sunset.
Special observance: Offer water mixed with red sandalwood paste and red flowers to the Sun at sunrise. Donate wheat, jaggery, or copper to a temple or needy person.
Candle: Light the Confidence & Career Candle — Surya at sunrise before beginning the mantra.
Practise when: Surya is weak, debilitated (in Tula), combust, or afflicted in your chart. Also during Surya Mahadasha, when seeking government favour, or when experiencing chronic health issues, especially related to the heart, eyes, or bones.
Monday — Chandra/Soma Vrat
Graha: Chandra (Moon) Deity: Chandra Deva, Lord Shiva Governs: Mind, emotions, mother, fluids, sleep, mental health
What to eat: One meal in the evening. White-coloured foods are traditional — rice, milk, yoghurt (dahi), coconut, white sweets (kheer, payasam). Fruits permitted throughout the day.
What to avoid: Salt (some strict traditions avoid salt entirely on Monday), spicy food, grains other than rice, non-vegetarian food.
Mantra: Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah — chant 108 times in the evening, preferably facing the Moon (if visible).
Duration: Full day. Break with a white-food evening meal.
Special observance: Offer milk and white flowers to a Shiva Linga. Monday fasting is deeply connected to Shiva worship — combining the Vrat with Om Namah Shivaya recitation amplifies the effect on Chandra considerably.
Candle: Light the Peace & Calm Candle — Chandra during evening puja.
Practise when: Chandra is weak, waning (born during Krishna Paksha), debilitated (in Vrishchika), or afflicted by Rahu/Shani in the birth chart. Also when experiencing anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, relationship difficulties with mother, or emotional volatility. Monday Vrat is one of the most popular fasts in India, practised widely for marital harmony and mental peace.
Tuesday — Mangal Vrat
Graha: Mangal (Mars) Deity: Lord Hanuman, Kartikeya (Murugan) Governs: Energy, courage, siblings, property, blood, surgery
What to eat: One meal — wheat and jaggery-based foods are traditional (gur ki roti, halwa). Some traditions permit lentils (masoor dal, which is red/Mars-coloured). Fruits are permitted.
What to avoid: Salt (strict versions), non-vegetarian food (especially on this day), alcohol, fried food.
Mantra: Om Kram Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah — chant 108 times in the morning. Additionally, reciting Hanuman Chalisa once (or the Sunderkand on alternating Tuesdays) is an extraordinarily powerful Mangal remedy.
Duration: Sunrise to sunset. Break with an evening meal.
Special observance: Offer sindoor (vermillion), red flowers, and jaggery at a Hanuman temple. Donate red items (red cloth, red lentils, jaggery) on Tuesdays.
Candle: Light the Courage & Vitality Candle — Mangal during the morning ritual.
Practise when: Mangal is weak, debilitated (in Karka), or afflicted. Especially recommended for Mangal Dosh — the classical texts prescribe 21 consecutive Tuesday fasts as a primary remedy for Mangal Dosh before marriage. Also useful during Mangal Mahadasha, property disputes, legal conflicts, or when experiencing chronic anger, accidents, or low energy.
Wednesday — Budh Vrat
Graha: Budh (Mercury) Deity: Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha Governs: Intellect, communication, business, education, nervous system
What to eat: One meal — green-coloured foods are traditional. Moong dal (green gram), green vegetables, fruits (especially green grapes, green apples). Butter and ghee are permitted.
What to avoid: Non-vegetarian food, alcohol, extremely spicy food.
Mantra: Om Bram Breem Broum Sah Budhaya Namah — chant 108 times in the morning. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama on Wednesdays is an excellent supplementary practice.
Duration: Sunrise to sunset. Break with an evening meal featuring green foods.
Special observance: Offer durva grass (green grass) and modak (sweet dumplings) to Lord Ganesha. Donate green items — green cloth, green moong, or green vegetables — on Wednesdays. Feeding green grass to cows is a traditional Budh remedy.
Candle: Light the Focus & Communication Candle — Budh during morning study or work.
Practise when: Budh is weak, combust (very common, as Mercury stays close to the Sun), debilitated (in Meena), or afflicted. Recommended during Budh Mahadasha, exam periods, business launches, when experiencing communication difficulties, speech impediments, or nervous system issues.
Thursday — Guru Vrat (Brihaspativar Vrat)
Graha: Guru (Jupiter) Deity: Lord Vishnu, Brihaspati (Guru of the Devas) Governs: Wisdom, wealth, children, Dharma, spirituality, higher education
What to eat: One meal — yellow-coloured foods are essential. Chana dal (Bengal gram), yellow rice (with turmeric), banana, mango (when in season), besan (gram flour) preparations. Milk, ghee, and jaggery are all permitted and recommended.
What to avoid: Non-vegetarian food (absolutely), alcohol, salt (strict versions), washing hair or clothes (traditional observance).
Mantra: Om Gram Greem Groum Sah Gurave Namah — chant 108 times in the morning while facing northeast. The Guru Gita or Brihaspati Stotram are powerful supplementary texts.
Duration: Full day. Break with an evening meal of yellow foods.
Special observance: Offer yellow flowers and chana dal to a Vishnu temple. Donate yellow items — yellow cloth, turmeric, chana dal, bananas — on Thursdays. Respecting and serving teachers, elders, and Brahmins on this day is considered one of the most effective Guru remedies. Read or listen to the Brihaspativar Vrat Katha (the traditional story associated with this fast).
Candle: Light the Wealth & Wisdom Candle — Guru during morning prayer.
Practise when: Guru is weak, debilitated (in Makara), retrograde, or afflicted. Essential during Guru Mahadasha, when seeking financial growth, wisdom, children, or spiritual advancement. Also recommended when facing legal problems (Jupiter governs justice) or educational obstacles. Thursday Vrat for 16 consecutive weeks is a classical prescription for overcoming poverty and spiritual stagnation.
Friday — Shukra Vrat
Graha: Shukra (Venus) Deity: Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Durga, Shukracharya Governs: Love, marriage, beauty, luxury, wealth, art, reproductive health
What to eat: One meal — white and sweet foods. Kheer (rice pudding), sweets, fruit, yoghurt, milk. White rice is the staple grain.
What to avoid: Non-vegetarian food, sour foods, excessively salty foods, alcohol.
Mantra: Om Dram Dreem Droum Sah Shukraya Namah — chant 108 times in the evening. Reciting the Lakshmi Chalisa or Sri Suktam on Fridays is an excellent supplementary practice for wealth and harmony.
Duration: Full day. Break with an evening meal.
Special observance: Offer white flowers, rice, and white sweets to a Lakshmi idol or image. Donate white items — white cloth, sugar, rice, camphor, or white sweets — on Fridays. Wear clean, white clothes during the Vrat if possible. Read or listen to the Shukravar Vrat Katha.
Candle: Light the Love & Attraction Candle — Shukra during evening puja.
Practise when: Shukra is weak, debilitated (in Kanya), combust, or afflicted. Recommended during Shukra Mahadasha, when facing marital discord, financial difficulties, lack of artistic inspiration, or reproductive health issues. Friday Vrat for 21 consecutive weeks is prescribed for attracting a spouse, improving an existing marriage, and enhancing material prosperity.
Saturday — Shani Vrat
Graha: Shani (Saturn) Deity: Lord Shani Dev, Hanuman, Bhairava Governs: Karma, discipline, longevity, servants, chronic illness, justice
What to eat: One meal — black or dark-coloured foods are traditional. Black sesame seeds (kala til), black urad dal, mustard oil preparations. Simple, austere food — the Saturnine principle is one of discipline, not indulgence.
What to avoid: Non-vegetarian food, alcohol (especially on this day), luxurious or rich food, and overeating. The Shani Vrat specifically calls for austerity — eat to sustain, not to enjoy.
Mantra: Om Pram Preem Proum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah — chant 108 times in the evening, facing west. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays is considered one of the most powerful Shani remedies (Hanuman is immune to Shani's influence and protects his devotees from Saturn's harshest lessons).
Duration: Full day. Break with an evening meal after sunset.
Special observance: Pour mustard oil on a Shani idol or black stone while reciting the Shani mantra. Donate black items — black sesame, black urad dal, mustard oil, iron items, dark blue or black cloth — on Saturdays. Feed crows (considered Shani's vehicle, or Vahana). Visit a Shani temple if one is accessible.
Candle: Light the Discipline & Protection Candle — Shani during evening meditation.
Practise when: Shani is malefic in the chart, during Sade Sati (the 7.5-year Saturn transit), during Shani Mahadasha/Antardasha, or when experiencing chronic delays, career obstacles, legal problems, or karmic patterns that feel inescapable. Saturday Vrat is the primary free remedy for all Saturn-related difficulties. 11 consecutive Saturday fasts is the standard prescription.
Special Fasting Days — Beyond the Weekly Calendar
Ekadashi (11th Day of Each Lunar Fortnight)
Ekadashi fasting is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed twice per lunar month (during Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha). It strengthens Guru (Jupiter) and Budh (Mercury) energies and is one of the most Sattvic fasts in the Vedic calendar. On Ekadashi, devotees avoid all grains and beans, consuming only fruits, milk, nuts, and root vegetables (some strict observers take only water). Ekadashi is considered the supreme fast for spiritual purification and Vishnu devotion.
Pradosh Vrat (13th Day of Each Lunar Fortnight)
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, observed during the twilight hour (1.5 hours before and after sunset). Strengthens Chandra and nullifies Rahu/Ketu afflictions. Particularly powerful for resolving debts (both financial and karmic).
Chaturthi (4th Day of Each Lunar Fortnight)
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Strengthens Budh (Mercury) and Ketu. Fasting on Chaturthi removes obstacles in education, business, and new ventures.
Practical Guidelines for Fasting
If you have never fasted before, start with a single-day fruit-and-milk fast on the weekday corresponding to your most challenging Graha. Observe how your body and mind respond. Gradually extend to a full sunrise-to-sunset fast over the following weeks.
Medical considerations: If you have diabetes, low blood pressure, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any condition that makes fasting medically inadvisable, modify the fast to a "partial Vrat" — eat Sattvic, Graha-appropriate foods in small quantities rather than abstaining completely. The Vedic tradition explicitly states that Vrat should strengthen, not weaken, the practitioner. A Vrat that harms your health serves no spiritual purpose.
Children and elderly: Children under 12 and adults over 70 are traditionally exempt from full fasting. They may observe a "symbolic Vrat" by eating only the Graha-appropriate foods for that day and increasing their mantra practice.
Consistency over intensity: One fast per week, maintained for 11-21 consecutive weeks, is more effective than sporadic intense fasting. The karmic pattern you are addressing through the Vrat was created over lifetimes — it shifts through sustained, gentle pressure, not dramatic one-time gestures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fast for multiple Grahas on different days of the same week? Yes, but start with one day per week and add another only after the first has become comfortable and routine (typically after 4-6 weeks). Fasting more than 2-3 days per week is not recommended for householders (Grihasthas) — the body needs adequate nutrition for worldly responsibilities.
What if my challenging Graha and my Rashi ruler are the same planet? This is actually ideal — it means fasting on that day strengthens your Rashi lord while simultaneously propitiating the malefic influence. For example, a Makara (Capricorn) native undergoing Sade Sati should absolutely fast on Saturdays — it serves both purposes simultaneously.
Does fasting work without mantra recitation? Fasting alone provides physical and mental benefits. But the Jyotish-specific planetary remedy comes from the combination of fasting (physical sacrifice) + mantra (vibrational reprogramming) + charity (karmic rebalancing). All three together produce the fastest and most lasting results.
