Navagraha Candle Ritual Guide — Light, Chant, Transform

The Navagraha — nine celestial bodies that govern the karmic unfolding of every human life — are not distant astronomical objects in the Vedic worldview. They are conscious forces, Devatas with personalities, preferences, and the power to bless or challenge depending on their placement in your birth chart and their current transit positions. The practice of lighting a sacred candle dedicated to a specific Graha is one of the oldest and most accessible forms of planetary propitiation — a weekly ritual that requires no priest, no temple, and no special training, yet produces tangible shifts in consciousness and circumstance when practised with sincerity and consistency.

The Nine Sacred Candles

Each candle in the Navagraha collection is designed to resonate with the energy signature of its corresponding Graha — through colour, fragrance, and the intention embedded in its creation.

Rahu and Ketu do not own weekdays in the traditional system. Rahu's effects are strongest during Rahu Kaal on any day, and Saturday (Shani's day) is traditionally used for Rahu propitiation. Ketu shares Mangal's martial energy, making Tuesday appropriate, though some traditions prescribe Thursday or Saturday.

Setting Up Your Sacred Space

The physical environment in which you perform the candle ritual matters — not because the Graha demands luxury, but because your own mind needs clear sensory signals that it is transitioning from ordinary consciousness to sacred space.

Essential Setup:

  1. Clean surface. A small table, shelf, or dedicated altar space. Wipe it down before each use. A clean copper or brass plate (thali) placed on the surface provides an ideal base for the candle.

  2. Direction. Face the direction indicated in the table above. If your room layout prevents this, face east as the universal default — all auspicious Vedic activities begin facing the rising Sun.

  3. Seat. Sit on a clean cloth, mat, or asana on the floor. If physical limitations prevent floor-sitting, a chair is perfectly acceptable. The key is a stable, comfortable posture that you can maintain for 15-30 minutes without fidgeting.

  4. Accessories (optional but recommended): A small copper vessel of water (for Arghya if performing the Surya ritual), a mala (prayer beads) with 108 beads for mantra counting, and your Rashi attar applied to pulse points before beginning.

  5. No distractions. Phone on silent. Door closed. Inform household members of your practice time. Consistency of timing matters more than duration — 15 minutes at the same time every week is more powerful than an irregular hour-long session.

The Complete Candle Ritual — Step by Step

This universal ritual framework applies to all nine Navagraha candles. The only variables are the specific mantra and the day of the week.

Step 1: Purification (2 minutes)

Sit before your altar. Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths — inhale through the nose for a count of four, hold for four, exhale through the mouth for six. With each exhale, consciously release the concerns and agitation of the day. This is not meditation yet — it is simply clearing the mental field so that the ritual can take root in calm soil.

Sprinkle a few drops of water around the candle in a clockwise circle (this is a simplified Prokshana — purification of the ritual space). If you have Gangajal (Ganges water), use that; otherwise, clean water with a pinch of raw turmeric serves the same purpose.

Step 2: Lighting the Candle

Strike the match or lighter with your right hand. As the flame touches the wick, recite: "Om [Graha Name] Devaya Namah" — for example, "Om Surya Devaya Namah" for the Confidence & Career Candle — Surya. This simple invocation acknowledges the Graha as a conscious being and announces your intention to connect.

Watch the flame stabilise. A steady, upright flame indicates a receptive environment. If the flame flickers excessively despite no wind, it is traditionally interpreted as the Graha's energy actively engaging with the space — not a bad sign, but a sign of dynamic interaction.

Step 3: Mantra Recitation (10-20 minutes)

Using your mala, recite the Graha's Beej Mantra 108 times. Move one bead per recitation. Keep your gaze softly focused on the flame — not staring intensely, but resting the eyes on the light as an anchor for concentration. If the mind wanders (it will), gently return attention to the flame and the mantra.

The Nine Beej Mantras:

ChandraOm Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah108 (1 mala)

KetuOm Stram Streem Stroum Sah Ketave Namah108 (1 mala)

Step 4: Silent Meditation (5 minutes)

After completing the 108 recitations, set the mala down. Close your eyes and sit in silence. The mantra vibration is still reverberating in your subtle body — this silent period allows it to integrate. Do not try to think or not-think. Simply be present with the warmth of the candle flame (you can feel it even with eyes closed) and the lingering resonance of the mantra.

Step 5: Sankalpa and Closing

Open your eyes. Look at the flame one final time. Mentally state your Sankalpa — a specific, positive intention related to the Graha's domain. For Surya: clarity of purpose and vitality. For Shani: discipline and karmic resolution. For Shukra: harmony in relationships.

Close with: "Om Shanti Shanti Shanti" — three times, addressing peace at the physical, mental, and spiritual levels.

You may extinguish the candle with a candle snuffer or by gently waving your hand above the flame. In the Vedic tradition, blowing out a sacred flame with breath is generally avoided — your breath (Prana) is sacred and should not be used to end a fire ritual. However, if you have no snuffer, gently pinching the wick or using a small metal lid is perfectly acceptable.

The Weekly Ritual Calendar

For a complete Navagraha practice, light one candle per day according to this calendar:

DayGrahaCandleBest Time
SundaySuryaConfidence & Career Candle — SuryaSunrise (6:00-7:00 AM)
MondayChandraPeace & Calm Candle — ChandraEvening (6:00-7:00 PM)
TuesdayMangalCourage & Vitality Candle — MangalMorning (7:00-8:00 AM)
WednesdayBudhFocus & Communication Candle — BudhMorning (7:00-8:00 AM)
ThursdayGuruWealth & Wisdom Candle — GuruMorning (6:00-7:00 AM)
FridayShukraLove & Attraction Candle — ShukraEvening (6:00-7:00 PM)
SaturdayShaniDiscipline & Protection Candle — ShaniEvening (5:00-6:00 PM)

If the full seven-day practice feels overwhelming, start with just the candle of your most important Graha — typically the ruler of your Moon Rashi or the Graha currently in Mahadasha (major planetary period). Even a single weekly candle ritual, practised consistently for 40 days (a traditional Mandala period), produces noticeable shifts.

Which Candle Do You Need Most?

The answer depends on your birth chart and current transits. Here are common scenarios:

Candle Safety and Practical Notes

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. If you must step away, extinguish it and relight when you return.
  • Place the candle on a heat-resistant surface. The copper or brass thali recommended above serves this purpose.
  • Keep away from curtains, papers, and flammable materials.
  • Each candle is designed to burn for multiple weekly sessions. Trim the wick to approximately 5mm before each lighting for a clean, steady flame.
  • Store candles in a cool, dry place when not in use. Extreme heat can affect the fragrance oils infused in the wax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I light multiple candles at once? Yes, during special occasions like Navratri (where all nine candles are lit across nine nights) or during a personal Navagraha puja. For weekly practice, however, single-Graha focus is more effective. Lighting one candle with full concentration produces better results than lighting nine with divided attention.

What if I miss my weekly day? Resume the following week. Do not try to "make up" missed days by lighting two candles the next week. The power of this practice lies in regularity over time, not in individual sessions. If you missed Saturday's Shani candle, simply light it the next Saturday. The Graha does not keep a grudge — consistency over months is what shifts planetary energy.

How long should the candle burn each session? A minimum of 15 minutes (the approximate time for 108 mantra recitations) and a maximum of one hour. The candle does not need to burn completely in one session — it is designed for multiple uses across many weeks.

Can I do this ritual during menstruation? There is no universal Vedic prohibition. Some traditions suggest abstaining from fire rituals during menstruation, while others consider the menstrual period a time of heightened spiritual receptivity. Follow the tradition of your family or Guru. If in doubt, you may perform the mantra mentally (Manasika Japa) without lighting the candle, and resume the full ritual afterward.
