East Facing House Vastu Plan — Complete Room Layout Guide

Bottom line first: An east-facing house is considered the most auspicious orientation in Vastu Shastra because it captures the first light of the rising sun — the very light that Vedic texts associate with health, wealth, knowledge, and new beginnings. If your main door opens to the east, you are already living in alignment with one of the most powerful natural forces.

This guide gives you the complete, room-by-room Vastu layout for an east-facing home — what goes where, why it goes there, and what to do if your existing home deviates from the ideal.

Why East Is the Most Auspicious Direction

In the Vastu Purusha Mandala — the sacred 9×9 grid that maps cosmic energy onto a plot of land — the east (Purva) is governed by Indra, king of the devas and lord of abundance. The Brihat Samhita (Chapter 53) states:

"Pūrvābhimukhaṃ gṛhaṃ sarvaśreṣṭhaṃ" — A house facing east is best of all.

The east is also the direction from which Surya (the Sun) rises. Morning sunlight streaming through an east-facing entrance:

  • Carries maximum ultraviolet energy before noon, which is scientifically proven to kill airborne pathogens
  • Activates the Aditya corner of the Mandala, associated with vitality and government favour
  • Fills the home with prana (life-force) from the first moment of day

Practically speaking, east-facing homes receive:

Time of DayBenefit
Dawn to 10 AMDeep, health-giving morning sunlight in living areas
10 AM to 2 PMNeutral midday light, reduced heat in bedrooms
AfternoonCool, pleasant shading of main living zones

For families seeking professional success, academic excellence, or spiritual growth, an east-facing home is the starting point. Now let's place every room correctly.

The 3×3 Vastu Grid for East Facing Plots

The Vastu Purusha Mandala simplifies to a 3×3 grid for practical home design. For an east-facing plot, use this as your blueprint:

NORTH
╔═══════════╦═══════════╦═══════════╗
║ NW ║ NORTH ║ NE ║
║ Bathroom ║ Living / ║ Pooja / ║
║ Guest Bed ║ Drawing ║ Study ║
╠═══════════╬═══════════╬═══════════╣
║ WEST ║ CENTRE ║ EAST ║
║ Children ║ Open / ║ MAIN ║
║ Bedroom ║ Courtyard ║ ENTRANCE ║
╠═══════════╬═══════════╬═══════════╣
║ SW ║ SOUTH ║ SE ║
║ Master ║ Storage / ║ Kitchen ║
║ Bedroom ║ Stairs ║ ║
╚═══════════╩═══════════╩═══════════╝
SOUTH EAST →

Cardinal directions are marked on the grid. Main entrance faces east (right side of grid).

Room-by-Room Vastu Layout

1. Main Entrance — East or Northeast

The main door of an east-facing house should ideally be placed in the east or northeast (Ishanya) quadrant of the eastern wall.

  • Ideal pada positions: Pada 5, 6, or 7 on the eastern wall (counting from the northeast corner)
  • Door height: Should be taller than wide — minimum ratio 2:1
  • Door material: Heavy teak or sheesham wood; metal doors are acceptable if no wood is available
  • Threshold: Raise the threshold (dwaar-sill) by at least 2 inches — prevents energy from draining out
  • What to avoid: Main door directly opposite the back door; this creates an "energy tunnel" that depletes the home

Place a Sri Yantra or a Sri Yantra energised plate at the entrance for amplified prosperity energy. The yantra's bindu (central point) should face inward, toward the home's interior.

Flat/apartment adaptation: If your apartment's corridor faces east but your unit door is on the north or south wall, the corridor direction is what counts as your facing. Hang a small Vastu yantra at the main gate of the building on the east side.

2. Pooja Room (Prayer Room) — Northeast

Deity: Ishana (form of Shiva), associated with divine grace and spiritual knowledge

The northeast corner — called Ishanya in Sanskrit — is the holiest zone of any home. It is where earth energy and cosmic water energy converge. The Manasara (Chapter 8) designates this corner as the seat of divine consciousness.

Rules for the pooja room in the northeast:

  • The idol or image should face west (so you face east while praying)
  • Keep this room at a slightly lower elevation than surrounding rooms — it should feel like a subtle depression that "collects" positive energy
  • No attached bathroom; no storage of old or broken items
  • Use white, cream, or light yellow for walls
  • Light a ghee diya (oil lamp) every morning facing east

Critical mistake to avoid: Never place the pooja room in the south or southeast. The Brihat Samhita specifically warns that placing fire rituals in the north or divine images in the south brings misfortune.

3. Kitchen — Southeast

Deity: Agni (fire), lord of transformation and digestion

The southeast (Agneya) corner is the kitchen's natural home. Agni rules this zone, making it the only place in the house where fire — whether gas stove, electric cooktop, or oven — is cosmically supported.

For east-facing homes, the kitchen sits in the southeast, occupying roughly one-ninth of the plot.

Kitchen Vastu checklist:

  • Stove placement: Against the eastern or southern wall, never facing north or west
  • Cook's direction: Cook should face east while cooking — never face south (associated with Yama, lord of death)
  • Sink: Northwest corner of the kitchen (water and fire should not share a wall)
  • Storage: Southern and western walls for heavy storage, cupboards, refrigerator
  • Window: East-facing window for morning light and ventilation
  • Colors: Orange, red, or yellow — fire colors that energise the Agni zone
  • Do not: Place a mirror facing the stove; this "doubles" the fire and creates conflict energy

4. Master Bedroom — Southwest

Deity: Nairriti, associated with stability and grounding

The southwest (Nairriti) zone carries maximum earth element energy. In Vastu, the heaviest, most stable energy sits in the southwest — which is exactly why the head of the family sleeps here. The Mayamata states that the southwest bedroom gives the homeowner authority, stability in finances, and deep sleep.

Southwest bedroom rules:

  • Bed position: Head toward south or east while sleeping (never toward north)
  • Bed placement: Southwest corner of the room, with a gap of at least 3 inches from the wall
  • Mirror: Never directly facing the bed — use a wardrobe with an internal mirror or a mirror on the north/east wall
  • Heavy furniture: Wardrobes and storage on the south and west walls
  • Ceiling height: Should be slightly higher than other rooms if possible — southwest carries weight, so "lifting" the ceiling counterbalances heaviness
  • Colors: Earth tones — terracotta, beige, light brown; avoid bright reds

For couples seeking harmony and stability, place an energised Sri Yantra on the eastern wall of the master bedroom.

5. Children's Bedroom — West or Northwest

The west (Varuna) or northwest (Vayavya) zones are ideal for children's bedrooms in east-facing homes.

  • West bedroom: Best for older children and students — Varuna blesses with discipline and knowledge
  • Northwest bedroom: Good for younger children and guests — Vayu (wind energy) keeps the mind fresh and curious
  • Bed direction in children's room: Head toward east while sleeping — promotes academic sharpness
  • Study table: Face east or north while studying
  • Bookshelves: Northwest or north wall
  • Colors: Blue, green, or white

6. Guest Bedroom — Northwest

The northwest is ideal for guests because Vayu energy keeps people moving — guests don't overstay their welcome when sleeping in the northwest! This is not folklore; it reflects the principle that northwest energy supports transience and mobility.

7. Living Room / Drawing Room — North or East

For an east-facing home, the living room works best in the:

  • North: Governed by Kubera (lord of wealth), invites prosperity and social connections
  • East: Extension of the main entrance energy — a bright, welcoming space

Living room Vastu:

  • Keep it open, airy, and clutter-free
  • Heavy sofa/furniture on the south and west walls
  • Centre of the room should be open or have only a lightweight coffee table
  • TV placement: South or southeast wall (screen faces north/northwest toward viewers sitting in the north)
  • Main colours: White, cream, light green, or pale yellow

8. Bathrooms and Toilets — Northwest or South

Bathrooms and toilets carry "impure" energy in Vastu — they must never pollute the sacred zones (NE, center, SW).

For east-facing homes:

  • Ideal locations: Northwest (guests/children's bathroom) or south (master bathroom)
  • Toilet seat direction: Should face north or south, never east or west
  • Keep the toilet lid closed at all times when not in use — this prevents "draining" of energy
  • Mirror: East or north wall of the bathroom
  • Exhaust fan: East or north wall
  • Never: Bathroom in northeast (see our toilet in northeast dosh guide), southwest (disturbs master bedroom stability), or directly above the pooja room

9. Staircase — South or West

Staircases represent movement and weight — both Vastu properties of the southern and western zones.

Staircase rules for east-facing homes:

  • Ideal location: South, southwest, or west quadrant
  • Rotation direction: Always clockwise when ascending (Pradakshina — the sacred circumambulation direction)
  • Number of steps: Odd numbers (15, 17, 19, 21) are preferred over even
  • Under-staircase: Can be used for storage or small bathroom; never use as kitchen or pooja room
  • Never: Staircase in northeast or center (Brahmasthan) — see our staircase in center dosh guide

10. Store Room — South or Southwest

Heavy, inactive energy suits the south and southwest. Store rooms, utility rooms, and pantries work well here.

  • Keep it organised — clutter in the southwest blocks the head of household's finances
  • Do not use the storeroom to dump broken, unused, or negative items like old mirrors, broken idols, or discontinued medicines

11. Parking — Northwest or North

In east-facing independent homes:

  • Car parking: Northwest corner of the plot or north side
  • The garage/car porch should not block the main east entrance
  • Avoid heavy concrete structures in the northeast — keep the northeast open and at a lower level than the rest of the plot

12. Garden / Open Space — North or East

Open land and gardens in the north and east amplify the prosperity (Kubera) and health (Surya) energies.

  • Plant placement: Small, low-growing plants in north and east; larger trees in south and west
  • Water feature: Fountain or small pond in northeast or north — water in the northeast amplifies spiritual energy (but avoid a water tank underground in the northeast — see our underground water southwest dosh guide)
  • Tulsi (holy basil): Plant in the northeast or east, facing east — Tulsi in this direction brings health and divine protection
  • Avoid: Large trees directly in front of the east entrance; they block solar prana

Energising Your East Facing Home — Naksham Recommendations

An east-facing home already has cosmic momentum working in its favour. Two tools from Naksham amplify this natural advantage:

1. Energised Sri Yantra — The Sri Yantra is the geometric form of Lakshmi's grace. Placed at the east entrance or pooja room northeast wall, it multiplies the Indra-Kubera axis of east-north, which governs prosperity and abundance. Our Sri Yantra is consecrated on a Shukla Paksha Friday with Shodashopachara puja.

2. Success Ritual Candle — Light this in the eastern zone of your home every morning during your daily ritual. The candle's fragrance formula is crafted around solar ingredients — saffron, amber, and sandalwood — that resonate with Surya's energy. Shop the Success Ritual Candle.

Common Vastu Mistakes in East Facing Homes

  1. Toilet in northeast: The single worst placement in any home. If your northeast has a toilet, treat it as an urgent dosh. Read the complete toilet in northeast dosh guide.

  2. Kitchen in northeast: Agni (fire) in Ishanya (water-divine zone) creates an elemental conflict. See kitchen in northeast dosh guide.

  3. Master bedroom in northeast: This displaces the homeowner from the authority zone (southwest) and weakens their status and health.

  4. Heavy construction in northeast: Any elevated platform, raised garden bed, or heavy storage in the northeast blocks the flow of divine water-light energy.

  5. Trees blocking the eastern entrance: A large neem or peepal directly in front of the main east door blocks Surya's prana. Move the tree or trim it significantly.

  6. South wall shorter than north wall: In east-facing homes, the south boundary should be equal to or slightly higher/heavier than the north. A lighter south allows Yama's energy to enter — bring in health problems.

Frequently Asked Questions — East Facing House Vastu

Q1. Is an east-facing house always good, or does it depend on the birth chart?

An east-facing house is universally auspicious in Vastu Shastra regardless of birth chart. However, Jyotish (astrology) can add nuance: if you have a very powerful Mars or Saturn placement, a south-facing house may also suit you. For pure Vastu analysis, east is the top choice.

Q2. Can the main door be on the north side of the east wall?

Yes — a door in the northeast quadrant of the east wall is actually the most auspicious position. The Brihat Samhita specifically mentions the northeast pada of the eastern wall as the "Ishana path" — the divine doorway.

Q3. We have an east-facing plot but the house construction faces the road, which is east but slightly northeast. Is this still east-facing?

If the main entrance faces between 45° and 90° (northeast to east), it is considered an east-facing home for Vastu purposes. Northeast is a subset of the auspicious eastern quadrant.

Q4. My kitchen is in the northeast of my east-facing apartment. What do I do?

This is a serious dosh. If structural changes are not possible, use: (1) a copper Vastu yantra on the kitchen wall, (2) salt bowls in the northeast corner of the kitchen, (3) a red cloth or curtain between the NE kitchen and the rest of the home. Full remedy protocol in our kitchen in northeast guide.

Q5. Should the east-facing house have more windows on the east side?

Yes — the east wall should have the maximum number of windows. Vastu favours more openings in the north and east, fewer in the south and west. This is also thermally efficient — morning sun warms the east, afternoon heat is kept out by fewer west windows.

Q6. Is it okay to have the garage door as the main east-facing entrance?

No. A garage door is not a "main door" in Vastu. The home must have a dedicated pedestrian entrance on the east or northeast. If the garage occupies the east face, this is a significant Vastu problem that needs to be remedied structurally if possible.

Q7. We want to buy an east-facing plot. What shape is ideal?

A square or north-south oriented rectangle is ideal. Additionally, a plot with a slight slope from south/west to north/east is auspicious — water should flow toward the northeast, not away from it.

Q8. Our pooja room is in the southwest because of space constraints. How do we fix this?

Southwest is the worst location for a pooja room (it is the zone of death and endings — ruled by Nairriti). If you cannot move it structurally, create a temporary altar in the northeast corner of any room, even a windowsill, and use that as your primary prayer point. The fixed pooja room should have a curtain keeping it covered when not in use, and a Vastu yantra should be placed inside it.

Q9. Does an east-facing house require any specific colours for the exterior?

Yes. The exterior of an east-facing home looks best in: white (purity, Surya), light yellow (knowledge, Jupiter), or cream/off-white. Avoid dark grey or black exteriors — these suppress the solar energy that is your home's greatest asset.

Q10. What is the significance of having a threshold (step) at the main east entrance?

The threshold (dewara-sill or dehliz) symbolically separates the outer world (maya) from the inner world (home/sacred space). A raised threshold prevents energy from "spilling out" through the entrance. Classical texts recommend a minimum 2-inch raised threshold with auspicious symbols (swastika or Om) carved or painted on it.

Sources: Brihat Samhita (Varāhamihira, 6th century CE), Manasara (attributed to Manasara, compiled 5th–9th century CE), Mayamata (Tamil Vastu text, compiled 10th century CE). Naksham interprets these classical texts for modern built environments.
