Types of Doshas in Vedic Astrology
Doshas are specific planetary afflictions in your birth chart that can create challenges in certain areas of life. The word "Dosha" comes from Sanskrit meaning "fault" or "defect," but a better translation is "imbalance" — doshas represent areas where planetary energy is not flowing harmoniously and may need attention or remedies. While doshas sound alarming, they are extremely common — most people have at least one — and each has well-documented remedies in classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika.
The three most commonly checked doshas are: Sade Sati (Saturn's 7.5-year transit over your Moon sign), Mangal Dosh (Mars in marriage-affecting houses), and Kaal Sarp Dosh (all planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu). Additionally, Pitra Dosh (ancestral karma) is checked when Sun is afflicted by Rahu/Ketu. Our tool checks all major doshas automatically from your birth data.
Kaal Sarp Dosh Explained
Kaal Sarp Dosh forms when all seven physical planets (Sun through Saturn) are positioned on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis in the birth chart. There are 12 named types based on Rahu's house position — Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachud, Ghatak, Vishdhar, and Sheshnag.
This dosh is believed to create delays, obstacles, and sudden changes in life. However, it also grants intense focus and eventual breakthrough — many highly successful people have Kaal Sarp in their charts. The key is channeling the concentrated energy productively rather than letting it create anxiety. Kaal Sarp requires birth time and place to detect since it depends on house positions. Remedies include: Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Puja (ideally at Trimbakeshwar temple in Nashik), chanting Rahu and Ketu Beej Mantras, offering coconuts at temples on Saturdays, and wearing Gomed (Hessonite) after consultation. The dosh's effects are strongest during Rahu and Ketu Dasha periods — check your Dasha timeline to know when these periods are active.
Pitra Dosh Explained
Pitra Dosh (ancestral karma dosha) forms when Sun (Surya) — the significator of father and ancestors — is afflicted by Rahu or Ketu in the birth chart, particularly in the 9th house (house of father and dharma). It is believed to carry forward unresolved karmic debts from ancestors that affect the native's current life.
Effects of Pitra Dosh include: difficulties in conceiving children, repeated financial setbacks despite hard work, strained relationship with father or father figures, and general sense of being held back by invisible forces. The classical remedy is performing Pitra Tarpan (water offering to ancestors) during Pitru Paksha (the annual 16-day ancestor remembrance period), visiting Gaya to perform Pind Daan, and donating food to Brahmins in the name of ancestors.

Mangal Dosh Explained
Mangal Dosh occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna. This is primarily considered for marriage compatibility — a Manglik person ideally marries another Manglik, or specific remedies are performed.
Several cancellation conditions exist: Mars in its own sign (Mesha/Vrischika), Mars in exaltation (Makara), or Jupiter's aspect on Mars. Our tool checks all cancellation conditions automatically. Sade Sati: Saturn's 7.5-Year Transit
Sade Sati occurs when Saturn (Shani) transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your Moon sign — approximately 2.5 years in each house, totaling 7.5 years. The first phase (12th house) brings mental stress and hidden expenses. The peak phase (1st house, directly over your Moon) is the most intense, affecting health, finances, and relationships. The third phase (2nd house) gradually eases as Saturn moves away.
Saturn returns to this position roughly every 29.5 years, so most people experience 2-3 Sade Sati cycles in their lifetime. To check if you are currently in Sade Sati, simply enter your date of birth in our tool — your Moon sign is computed and compared with Saturn's current position. The daily Rashifal also reflects Sade Sati influence on your daily predictions.
Sade Sati is not always negative — it rewards discipline, hard work, and patience. Many people achieve their greatest accomplishments during this period because Saturn rewards perseverance. Classical remedies include chanting the Shani Beej Mantra, donating black sesame seeds on Saturdays, and fasting on Saturdays.

Understanding Dosha Severity
Not all doshas are equally impactful. Our tool classifies each detected dosha into three severity levels — mild, moderate, and severe — to help you prioritize which doshas need active remedies and which need only awareness.
Mild doshas may not cause noticeable effects, especially if benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus) aspect the afflicted areas. Moderate doshas will create periodic challenges but are manageable with awareness and basic remedies. Severe doshas actively affect specific life areas and benefit significantly from dedicated remedial practices. Your free Kundali provides the complete planetary context needed to understand how doshas interact with the rest of your chart.
