What is Rashi?
Rashi is your Vedic zodiac sign, determined by the Moon's position at the time of your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is more important than the Sun sign because the Moon governs your mind, emotions, and instinctive reactions. There are 12 Rashis: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), and Meena (Pisces).
Moon Sign vs Sun Sign
Western astrology primarily uses the Sun sign (your zodiac based on birth month). Vedic astrology uses the Moon sign because the Moon moves through all 12 signs in just 28 days (vs the Sun's 365 days), making it far more specific to your exact birth moment. Two people born on the same day can have different Moon signs if born hours apart. Additionally, Vedic astrology applies the Lahiri Ayanamsa correction (~24°), which shifts signs compared to Western tropical astrology.
How Your Rashi Affects Daily Life
Your Rashi determines which daily Rashifal (horoscope) applies to you, which Nakshatras are compatible for marriage, which planetary transits affect you most, and which gemstones, mantras, and remedies are recommended. Every major prediction in Vedic astrology — from Gochar transit analysis to Dasha interpretation — starts with identifying your Rashi.
